Avro CF-105 "Arrow" MKI

This project has always had a soft spot with me. I even started a very large version for twin turbines that is still sitting in my garage, waiting to be completed. But it's still in the plug stage, so a long way from moulding. However I still wanted one, so, I took plans and scaled them for twin WeMoTec Mini-480 fans, or for those who can afford it, twin WeMoTec HW-609 fans. This model will be about 56" long with a 38" wingspan. The plug for the fuse has been carved and is presently in the final stages of sanding and polishing. The most challenging item to design was the large single piece tail cone. The foam cores have already been cut and seem to fit well. The airfoil is similar to the full size aircraft's airfoil, which also facilitates a scale attachment location. However, to assist in making the wing rigid and stronger than an all out scale version, I did thicken the wing a little. We're not likely to notice any difference, but if anything, the thicker wing will give a little more lift.

The kit will comprise of a 6 section fibreglass and carbon fibre fuselage (main body, nose section, canopy/turtle deck, two intakes and the tail cone) plus four intake ducts and two thrust tubes. Also included will be the foam cores for the wings and vertical fin, pre-cut all wood formers and selected balsa sheeting, plus most of the other items needed. There will be no landing gear provided as the plane will be bungee launched and belly landed. This does not mean development for retracts is not going to happen, but for the mains, custom retracts will have to be designed so the average guy will be able to fabricate them in the workshop. The nose retracts will most likely be off the shelf items.
