F-18A Hornet

This model was originally designed to be powered by a single OS.77 two stroke engine and a 5.25" diameter Dynamax fan. The plane flew well with this setup and could take off from a grass field at a total weight of just over 13 lbs. The moulds and airframe have been modified to accept twin WeMoTec 90 m.m. Midi fans using 16 - 18 cells for each fan.

The style of laying up the fuselage fiberglass has resulted in a shell that is still ridged yet very light, 32 oz's for a 74" long plane. The use of carbon fibre veil is extensive as seen in the pictures and additional strips will be used for the production version. My target weight is in the 11 to 12 lb range and it will have plug in wings, retractable landing gear for hard surface takeoffs and landings, with optional bungee launch for grass fields.

All fiberglass work will be done with polyester resin, no epoxy. This will keep the price down considerably. The kit will eventually comprise of all fiberglass and vacuformed parts, a clear canopy, foam cores for the wings, vertical fins and all moving stabs, pre-cut plywood formers and internal structure. As an option, either machined or moulded scale landing gear struts will be available for those who want to spend the extra cash.

I intend to offer the kit in several forms, the very basic will be the fibreglass parts with foam cores and patterns for wood parts only, then the full blown kit with everything you would expect from a complete kit. Then there will be the no hassle kit, which will include everything plus the two fans and the landing gear struts.

This kit is presently at the stage of fitting the internal formers. Next will be the placement of the fans and design work for the intake and thrust tube ducting. The wings, stab and vertical fins have been designed and test assembled. The main spars will be aluminum and plugged into custom made carbon fibre holders that will span the width of the fuselage to create a very strong and ridged structure. Some further mould work is still to be done to create the nose gun blister and a identification light lens on the port side if the Canadian CF-18A version is desired. I hope to have several "beta" kits ready by the summer and these will be going to a select few individuals to be proof built ( these chaps have already been selected ). Pricing will be around US$600.00 for the full kit. It may be a little less, but won't be more, it all depends on the amount of effort it takes to make the kit. The fuselage takes up to three days to make as it is a four part mould. The scale struts will be extra.
